Our curriculum

Your child's journey with us is carefully mapped out through two essential stages - the exploratory and fun-filled Year 1 and Year 2 (Key Stage 1) followed by the engaging and growth-focused Year 3 to 6 (Key Stage 2). They learn from specialist teachers commited to nurturing the unique potential in each child. Embracing our Learning.Firstâ„¢ approach, students are guided to become passionate, lifelong learners, ready to explore, challenge and discover.

English

Exploring worlds through words

Students  are instilled with a love for reading, writing and storytelling. They develop skills in reading comprehension, creative writing, grammar and vocabulary. Through daily phonics sessions, children develop strong reading, writing, and communication skills. This approach encourages creativity by using storytelling and interactive activities to build confidence in literacy.  Tenby SEH uses the Read Write Inc Phonics programme for Key Stage 1 and the Real Writing programme for Key Stage 2. This is an innovative, structured writing curriculum designed to develop strong writing skills across all stages of their education while building on critical thinking, creativity and mastery of writing.

Mathematics

Developing analytical minds

Our enhanced lessons encourage logical thinking and problem-solving. Learners study arithmetic, geometry and statistics, moving on to algebra and equations later. Practical activities build a solid foundation for future learning. The White Rose Maths programme offers a structured way to develop fluency, reasoning and problem-solving abilities through enjoyable activities.

Science

Discovering the wonders of science

Learners study biology, chemistry and physics through hands-on experiments. They learn about living organisms, materials, forces and energy. The White Rose Science programme helps students explore the natural world through hands-on experiments and inquiry-based learning. The curriculum sparks curiosity, encouraging children to think like young scientists. Students also participate in Hamilton Science, which is a dynamic programme that engages learners through hands-on investigative activities. It empowers students to develop effective methods of scientific enquiry.

Technological learning

Embracing future technology

Students learn basic coding, digital literacy, internet safety and use latest software. They develop digital literacy and coding skills using Byte-Ed, while VEX Robotics introduces them to robotics and programming through engaging, interactive activities. These programmes help students build essential technological skills for the future.

Music

Tuning into the rhythm

Students immerse themselves in the joy of music by learning an instrument, singing and participating in stage performances. They explore boundaries of creativity, self-expression and teamwork through music. Musical instruments are taught by professional instructors during extracurricular activities.

Students understand cultural influences on art, exploring the rich artistic traditions of both local and international cultures.

We are inclusive

Students shape a diverse learning community through the dynamic Project Based Learning programme. Students embrace varied viewpoints, tackle global issues and develop cross-cultural understanding. A tailored teaching approach ensures every learner, regardless of their learning style, needs or language abilities feels supported and empowered to succeed.

Opportunities for all

Students can enjoy personal development events like public speaking and social learning talks, participate in national and local competitions - such as coding, robotics and sports and engage in environmental awareness activities. Students pursue their passions, build friendships and develop a strong sense of identity and community through a choice of 100 co-curricular activities.

Student leadership opportunities

At Tenby SEH, we offer a variety of child leadership roles that encourage students to take responsibility, build confidence and develop essential teamwork and communication skills. Whether leading their peers in group projects, helping organise events, or representing their class, these roles help children grow into responsible, self-assured individuals ready for future challenges. Student opportunities for leadership include

  • Student council

  • Prefectorial Board

  • Eco-committee (Eco-Warriers)

  • Heads of House

House communities

Our house system gives every child the chance to shine beyond the classroom. They can earn house points for their talents in sports, environmental projects, community service and creative pursuits. With four vibrant house groups, Tiger, Pheonix, Falcon and Dragon, there's a place for every unique skill and passion.

Love of writing

At Tenby SEH, we embrace innovative learning approaches. In Early Years and Key Stage 1, Read Write Inc Phonics supports early reading and writing with engaging, structured lessons using visual, auditory, and kinaesthetic activities. Children advance through levels, becoming confident, independent readers and writers. For Years 3 to 6, ‘Real Writing’ builds strong writing skills, critical thinking and creativity. Focused on real-world communication, it encourages learners to craft meaningful content like stories and reports. Through planning, drafting, and revising, students see writing as an evolving skill, gaining confidence and ownership while mastering vocabulary, grammar and clear organisation.

Further afield

We love planning exciting experiences for our primary students. Throughout the year, we arrange delightful day trips to fascinating places, enriching our students' learning outside the traditional classroom setting. In the past our primary students have enjoyed trips to various educational places. These educational trips are not only great fun but also a valuable opportunity for students to strengthen friendships and develop independence.

Next steps

At the end of Year 6 students can continue their education at our International Secondary School.
