Primary – International Curriculum
The Primary years in Tenby International School are when Amazing Learning begins to take shape for students aged 5-11. It is at this stage that students learn according to specific subjects while also enjoying co-curricular activities, benefitting from participating in the broader school community through sports, the arts and other shared areas of interest.
Students are guided through two Key Stages during their Primary years – Key Stage 1 (Year 1 & Year 2) and Key Stage 2 (Year 3- Year 6) – with a scaffolded curriculum that embeds and introduces new concepts yearly.
Curriculum & Areas of Learning
We follow the National Curriculum for England (NCUK) during the primary years, with all children participating in the Cornerstone Project Based Learning Curriculum.
Cornerstones Project Based Learning Curriculum develops children aged 3-11 into informed, globally competent, and future-ready learners.
The CPBLC is progressive in its pedagogy, develops metacognition and is primary education best practice. It can be tailored to fit the children’s needs while developing their knowledge, skills and understanding. Through thematic units teachers create fun and engaging learning opportunities that enable children to make connections between subjects and the world around them.
A strong academic focus is adopted throughout all subjects, and students are empowered to take ownership of their own progress by creating their own pupil portfolios and taking part in Student Led Conferences that introduce a dialogue between teachers and students on the learning process.
Areas of Development
In line with our Amazing Learning philosophy, the goal of our Primary years programme is to develop the character of a lifelong learner by exposing students to repeated experiences that hardwire getting better through good struggle. Our teachers are trained to understand the difference between a good struggle and a bad struggle, and personalise their approach for each student to maximise learning outcomes.
The learning-focused approach that Amazing Learning encourages is also in line with the eight personal goals promoted by Cornerstones Project Based Learning Curriculum, which are:
- Thoughtfulness
- Morality
- Resilience
- Respect
- Communication
- Enquiry
- Cooperation
- Adaptability
Outside The Classroom
The Primary years are a student’s first opportunity to engage with the broader school community across the International stream, and is a crucial time in the development of social and interpersonal life skills. Harnessing this important stage in a student’s life, we are proud to offer a wide range of co-curricular activities to Primary students including sports, music and arts, and even specialist activities like public speaking. Instructors come from within the teacher body and from external experts, who are fully vetted and assessed before being appointed.
Primary students also enjoy a variety of trips that develop and complement the learning that takes place in the classroom. These include annual camps for Years 4, 5 and 6, which for many will be the first time they go on a multiple day outing with their classmates.
Furthermore, our whole campus House System provides children with opportunities to be rewarded for their efforts outside the classroom, where they can earn House Points for their participation in areas such as sport, environmental work, community service, and culture and creativity.
