Alumni Stories
Around Malaysia and the world, our former students are living out their potential to meet the challenges and opportunities of our fast-changing world. Meet some of our illustrious alumni and see what positive impact they are making in the world today.
Never stop learning, always aim high
“After I graduated Tenby Sixth Form in 2017, I enrolled at BAC for a twinning programme and I am now currently reading Law at the University of Liverpool.
I can confidently say that the subjects I chose for A Levels, particularly Psychology and Global Perspectives, have provided me with a strong foundation for Law studies. Not only did I find learning these subjects very interesting, they also helped me develop strong analytical skills. This has definitely come in handy while studying university-level Law.
As for choosing a twinning programme, it was definitely a bit nerve-wracking for me to complete only one year in Malaysia before going overseas. Life in university tends to be pretty fast-paced and requires a lot of independence. But looking back on it now, I would not have done it any other way. It has been an incredible learning experience.”
Know what you want and go for it
“When selecting my A Level subjects, the choices for me were pretty simple and straightforward, honestly. I knew I wanted to do something technical in my career, so Math and Physics were the natural choice. I chose Chemistry as it had ties with Physics and opened up the option for Chemical Engineering.
The three subjects I chose gave me basic but crucial knowledge in Science, which laid the groundwork for my university studies. An additional bonus was that they shared many related concepts and skills, so studying them became easier and learning became more natural.
From my university studies so far, it’s clear that the progression of knowledge picks up right where A-Levels leaves off. The university syllabus seemed to merge seamlessly from my previous studies at Tenby and runs further down the road with it. This helped me make the transition into university studies more smoothly.”
Take time to explore your life interests
“Originally, I didn’t intend on doing A Levels. I hadn’t even considered it after graduating Year 11. That was because I hadn’t thought clearly about what academic path I was going to take in further studies.
However, I realised that taking 2 years to do A Levels would be beneficial to help me figure out what I wanted to do. The relatively slower pace of taking just a handful of specialised subjects gave me the opportunity and space to work out what I wanted to pursue.
Taking A Levels also gave me the freedom and flexibility to explore my interests. I had the time to try my hand with some topics that interested me. Eventually I picked the one I liked best. This led me to applying to Monash University for a course in Fine Art.
This is not to say A Levels was a breeze. It was still tough but I thoroughly enjoyed my time studying at Tenby. It really was worth spending that time to prepare and improve myself before entering university.”
I gained communication skills and self-confidence
“Before I entered Sekolah Sri Tenby, I was an introvert. Communication was something that I struggled with. However, through all the interactive classroom sessions and school activities, I started to voice my thoughts out more and gained self-confidence along the way.
I’m grateful for the encouragement of my teacher, as I can now participate in every group discussion in university without difficulty, and of course communication and self-confidence are important in my journey to becoming a medical professional. That’s why I want to thank Sekolah Sri Tenby for all the guidance I received, which has helped me greatly on this journey of mine.”
