The International Curriculum

In all Tenby Schools, including Tenby International School Penang, we provide high quality international education through our holistic curriculum that prepares your child for success in a challenging, globalised world. Understanding that effective learning is more than just academic achievement. Our holistic curriculum and evidence-based approach seeks to build an attitude of excellence and develop a habit of independent learning in your child – valuable life skills that will enable them to go far in life.

At the same time, we also recognise that academic excellence is a key marker of students’ ability. We are proud to say that we have a strong academic track record as well, with our students scoring well above international averages.

Early Years

An international education begins in the Early Years, where students as young as three years old are encouraged to let their creative and curious minds lead them to everyday learning. Through a play-based approach, the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) Curriculum, which is based on the UK’s national curriculum, encourages well-rounded development that includes enhancement of young learners from a personal and social standpoint, through physical development and in terms of improved communication and language skills.

Primary

Tenby International School follows the International Primary Curriculum (IPC) during the Primary years, which is the English National Curriculum adapted for international students. This dynamic curriculum follows a child-centred, thematic approach that ensures children in Key Stage 1 (5 – 7 years old) and Key Stage 2 (7 – 11 years old) are fully engaged and enjoy the learning process. This is coupled with a rigorous assessment system to ensure that each child progresses well.

Secondary

Students navigate the Secondary years programme, from Key Stage 3 (Year 7 – Year 9) and Key Stage 4 (Year 10 & Year 11), working towards attaining their IGCSEs at the completion of Year 11. Education at this stage aims to develop learners who can succeed academically, emotionally and socially, and this is achieved by adhering to a well-defined Tenby Learner Profile which guides all our Secondary teachers to nurture key soft attributes in students which will serve them well in both work and life.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

While academic performance is important, success in life requires personal qualities that goes beyond academics. As such, we are always striving to provide students with a breadth and depth of learning experiences. This involves encouraging our students to actively participate in the life of the school, whether in academic or pastoral pursuits. Being an active member of the school community also helps them to discover new things about themselves as well as the people and the world around them.

Some of the unique avenues for learning your child could enjoy include:

  • Personal development events and camps (e.g. Duke of Edinburgh Award, Model United Nations, overseas trips and thematic camps)
  • Competitive events (Tenby Schools Penang has consistently done well in sports, robotics, English and other competitions)
  • Social responsibility activities (e.g. eco fairs, charity events, recycling activities and more)
  • And a wide variety of stimulating co-curricular activities

As students stretch themselves, they often face struggle and failure, which we regard as valuable learning experiences on the road to success. However, we strive to create an environment where students feel safe to take challenges. Our purpose is to constantly create opportunities for your child to experience all-rounded learning – academic, social, personal and physical – at a level that they amaze even themselves because they had achieved what they never thought was possible before. Through this process, your child will eventually develop the resilience and confidence needed for success in life.
